Meet at 7:45 am (depart at 8:00) at the Park-and-Ride on the south side of Bell Rd., just West of I-17.

Our lollipop shaped hike will encompass the Mesquite, Ford Canyon, and Willow Canyon trails. Although there is a lot of elevation gain, it is gradual. The views are spectacular, and if we're lucky we'll see some wildlife. During our hike, we have the option of taking a 1/4 mile spur trail to the actual spring in Willow Springs. When I did the pre-hike in January, the pool below the spring was frozen solid! If our timing is right, we can have a short rest and snack beside the pool. Wear sturdy hiking boots and bring 2-3 quarts of water and a light lunch/snacks. There is a $6 per vehicle park entry fee unless you have a Maricopa County Parks Pass. For non-members, there’s also a fee of $5.

Meet at 6:45 am (depart at 7:00) at the Holiday Inn east side parking area, just south of US 60 on Country Club Drive in Mesa.

This is one of the signature hikes in the Superstition Wilderness with more views of Weaver’s Needle than any other hike in the area. We will loop around Weaver’s Needle in a counter clockwise direction following Bluff Spring Trail (235), Terrapin Trail (234), Lost Dutchman’s Trail (104), and finally follow Peralta Trail (102) over Fremont Saddle and back to the parking lot. Sturdy hiking boots, long pants, and hiking poles are recommended due to heavy under brush and steep rocky conditions in many places. Bring plenty of water, snacks, electrolytes and lunch. No dogs or children please. Cost to non-members is $5.

Paddle and traverse with Darrel through rugged canyons, mountains, and low-water areas as he struggles to avoid submerged trees and sand bars. Experience some of the early history of Black Canyon such as Ring Bolts Rapids, overhead Gauge Cars and the remnants of historic Cat Walks. The first left after the second station is a service road. Do not turn there but continue on to the next left and turn here. Follow the signs to the Kiwanis Trail parking lot.

We'll start our hike on the Kiwanis Trail, up a lovely canyon. We'll start climbing right away and eventually connect to the National Trail on the South Mountain ridge line where we will have fabulous views of the entire Valley in all directions. From the National Trail we will take a short detour to climb up Goat Mountain. Then we will return to the National Trail and continue hiking west until we turn around and return via the same route. Total mileage will depend on the group but will be about 9 miles. Bring sunscreen, hat, boots, water, lunch and snacks. Cost to non-members is $5.

We’ll connect with the Red Tanks Trail to Whiskey Springs, return past Miner’s Needle, and home on the Dutchman Trail. This is a wild and beautiful country so bring your adventurous spirit. The area is filled with jagged rock formation and golden, lichen-covered slickrock with great views of the Superstition Flatiron & Weavers Needle formations. Mariah Secrest-Comer at the American Cancer Society at 602-952- 7553, phoenix.climb@cancer.org

The American Cancer Society Climb To Conquer Cancer event is the largest one-day climb event in the Southwest. 2013 will be the 30th Anniversary.

Teams of eight to 15 people participate in a hike through beautiful mountain scenery at South Mountain Park, and take part in a celebration at the Top of the Mountain as well as the Festival area at the bottom, which features entertainment, food and fun. Each team participates in pre-event fundraising. Climb To Conquer Cancer is a non-competitive event, so anyone and everyone can participate. Teams form from businesses, clubs, families, friends, hospitals, churches, schools and service organizations. These individuals all share a common purpose - their support of the American Cancer Society’s Mission.

Funds raised at this event go towards cutting edge research and services provided by the American Cancer Society to our local Phoenix community, including education about early detection and the prevention.

If you would like to join the Climb To Conquer Cancer event as a volunteer or participant, contact Mariah Secrest-Comer at the American Cancer Society at 602-952- 7553, phoenix.climb@cancer.org or visit community.acsevents.org/ctcphoenix.
