Meet at 6:45 am (depart at 7:00) at Wendy’s in Fountain Hills, on Shea Blvd., just west of the Beeline Highway.

The Hell’s Gate Wilderness is truly rugged and beautiful, with many scenic panoramas; a photographic gem. It was featured in this February’s Arizona Highways. This was the home of the ancient Salado people until about 1400 A.D., followed by the Apache several hundred years later. The Pleasant Valley War was waged here: a bloody feud between the Tewksbury and Graham families of ranchers in the late 1800s, famous in Arizona lore. While the hiker faces several moderate-to-steep climbs on the route to Hell’s Gate, there’s a challenging two mile hill on the return trip. Bring lunch and plenty of water. No dogs or children please. Cost to non-members is $5.

Potential water crossings and brush are in the offing but, alas this trail remains an "Undiscovered Country" to the leader! Bring a minimum of 2 liters of....water, various victuals, and $ for carpool. Wear appropriate footwear, sunscreen, and hat (bonus for those who sport a leek!). Cost to non-members is $5.

The road linked the state capital at Prescott to former towns like Senator, Goodwin and Walker, and also with a number of local mines in the area. We will stop along the way at historic and other points of interest and plan to end up at a great Mexican food restaurant in the Prescott area before returning to the valley. Need high clearance vehicle. Four wheel drive necessary if there’s been recent storms. Bring water and snacks for along the way.
