This is a casual 4X4 run from Apache Junction to the Salt River. This run will include FR12 as far as we can reasonably go, parts of 12, FR1356, FR3512, FR3554 again in reverse order. We will need SUVs or pickups with off road ground clearance. If you are not sure if your vehicle qualifies, please call one of us beforehand. Each driver will need a permit that is free and valid for 6 months. We currently have 4 vehicles with permits. It takes around two minutes to apply online. Larry applied and received his permit in 4 days. Gates to the area are locked and access combinations are listed on the free six-month permits. To request a permit by e-mail go to www.fs.usda.gov/tonto, click Passes and Permits, and then click Other Permits. Please call or e-mail Lynn, Don or Larry if you have questions. Meet at 7:45 am (depart at 8) at the Holiday Inn at US 60 and Country Club Drive. We’ll carpool to the Canyon Lake Marina, and from there head out on the Boulder Canyon Trail to La Barge Creek.

The trek up La Barge Canyon is beautiful, with Battleship Mountain looming to our right and Geronimo Head on the left. Our pace will be moderate, but there will be considerable rock scrambling. Great views across the Superstitions and down onto Canyon Lake make it worthwhile. We’ll end the day with a snack or light meal at the Canyon Lake Marina Restaurant. Please wear sturdy hiking boots, rain gear if appropriate, and bring plenty of water and snacks.
