Wednesday, February 3, 2016 - 6:45pm

Come at 6:15 to socialize!

AzOTC members Mei-Mei Ahlskog and Brian Hill hiked the Camino de Santiago from St Jean Pied de Port France to Santiago Spain this past summer. This 500 mile month long journey, also called the Way of St James and the Camino Frances, was profiled in the movie The Way, starring Martin Sheen.

They will, through photos and commentary, tell us their experiences and give us a first hand account of what to expect and how to prepare for this epic hike. Learn how long it takes, how to get there, what equipment and clothing to bring, and where to stay along the way. Mei Mei and Brian will tell us about the roads and trails they followed over the Pyrenees in France to Spain, and across its northern provinces from Navarra to Galicia.

If you have ever considered going on this journey in part or all, or just want to know what it is really all about, don’t miss this presentation.

Contact leader for meetup details and to determine if this hike is right for you.

Join "Missed The Turn" Mark for the "Super Bowl" of all hikes! Well, a hike on Super Bowl Sunday that is! We will hope for a clearer idea of the path from Strawberry back to Pine that I experienced during a snow recon late last year. This is an out and back hike in January conditions at 6000 feet, which could include snow.

Contact the leader by 8 pm the Thursday before so that I can access conditions and advise. If it is another snow hike, mild-winter gear will be required to attend.

Miss the game? Nah, we should be back in plenty of time unless we spend too much time at "That" place close to the trailhead.

Bring sunscreen, hat, boots, plenty of water, snacks, and hiking sticks if you have them. Again, equipment will depend on conditions.

Cost to non-members is $5.

We’ll carpool to the Peralta Trailhead, hike up Bluff Springs Trail, which takes us through the beautiful Barks Canyon and connect with the Dutchman Trail. We’ll connect with the Red Tanks Trail heading to Whiskey Springs, return past Miner’s Needle, and be homeward bound on the Dutchman Trail.

This is wild and beautiful country so bring your adventurous spirit, cameras, and zip-off pants because of the cat’s claw prevalent in the Whiskey Springs and Red Tanks areas.

Make sure you bring rain gear, energy food, and 3 to 4 liters of water and electrolytes.

Leaders:
Dan Rothman - dwrr1@yahoo.com, 480-773-5197

Location: Topgolf Entertainment Complex on Indian Bend Road just west of the Talking Stick Resort and Casino

Although this event involves hitting a golf ball with a golf club, it’s really a very fun hybrid of golf and skee ball. You swing golf clubs, provided by the facility, and try to hit microchipped balls into dartboard-like targets located at various distances from the tee. Don't worry if you're not a golfer or haven't played in many years -- you'll fit right in with our group. It's fun and competitive, but you won't be embarrassed no matter how badly you hit (or miss). That's because we'll split into teams, and only the best score on each ball will be used as the score for the team. The closer to the center and the further the target, the more points earned.

The facility is great, with beautiful views from the tees of the McDowell Mountains to the east. Also, there's a full restaurant and bar, so we'll be making this into a happy hour as well.

The cost per-person is $52.30. This includes 2 hours of unlimited play, a limited buffet with chicken sliders, brisket sliders, cole slaw and kettle chips, bottomless soda and iced tea, tax and gratuity. The price does not include alcoholic beverages (which might prove necessary) or additional food items, both of which may be ordered from the bar and restaurant during the course of play.

Sign-up is on a first-come basis, with a sign-up deadline of February 8th.

Come out and join us for a really unique, first-time AzOTC event.

We’ll carpool to the Spur Cross Recreation Area in Cave Creek, and from there head out on this out-and-back hike, crossing Cave Creek several times, rolling up and down through beautiful Sonoran desert, and eventually ascending to the top of a 300-foot high bluff overlooking Cave Creek at Chalk Canyon. Here, after a short and light bushwhack, we’ll explore an interesting and seldom visited Hohokam habitation ruin, with the remains of 30 pueblo-type buildings and numerous petroglyphs, before heading back.
