Meet at 7:45 am (leave at 8:00) at the north end of Chaparral Park, NE corner of Jackrabbit and Hayden in Scottsdale.

Our ride will be on the scenic Indian Bend Wash through parks and small lakes until we approach Mountain View. We'll ride east on Mountain View, a quiet residential street with wide bike paths through scenic communities to 124th St. Just beyond, we’ll loop around through a circular route that will return us to Mountain View for our return ride. It’s all paved so hybrid, mountain or road bike is fine.

Make sure you bring drinking water. Helmets are required.

The hike ends atop a cliff overlooking Massacre Grounds, the site where, according to legend, Apache warriors slaughtered a party of Mexican miners. Expect around 3.5 hours, which will include time for a snack or lunch.

Meet at 7:30 am (depart 7:45) on the south side of Kohl's parking lot at the NW corner of Arizona and Willis, just south of the San Tan (202) freeway.

Spanish explorer de Anza traveled this route in 1775 with 200 settlers and 1000 cattle on his way to the Presidio at San Francisco. The trail starts near the Tubac Presidio National Historic Park and follows the Santa Cruz River, crossing it 3 times each way on our out and back hike. The water level should be low enough to rock hop across, but everyone should bring poles, an additional pair of water shoes (Tevas, old tennis shoes, etc), small towel and spare socks in case we have to wade across. The trail ends at the Tumacacori Mission National Historic Park.

There is an optional Linner stop at Wisdoms in Tumacacori, acclaimed by AZ Highways Magazine for fruit burritos and shredded turkey enchiladas, flautas, chimis and margaritas to boot.

This is an all-day event with our return to Kohls about 7:30 pm.

No pets or children. This hike will be cancelled in case of rain. Overnight lodging is available, but not included in this event.

Cost to non-members is $5. Guests and new members should contact the hike leader prior to the hike.

Text, email, or telephone the leader by the day before the hike to let her know that you’re interested in hiking and your preference for length, start time, and difficulty of hike. The leader will then put together a route that takes those interests into account and let you know where and when to meet. Hikes will be offered all Wednesdays that the leader is in town.

South Mountain Park, the largest city park in the world, has nearly 17,000 acres and about 58 miles of trails ranging in length from 1 mile to 15.5 miles. There are more than 10 different trails, many of which intersect and can be connected to make a great variety of hikes.

Well behaved, leashed dogs are welcome. Bring plenty of water, electrolytes and snacks, and wear sturdy hiking boots.

Cost to non-members is $5.

Wednesday, December 7, 2016 - 6:00pm

Please join us at our December Membership Meeting on Wednesday, December 7th. It will be different than usual.

First, we'll be having our annual election for new board members for 2017. Come and cast your vote while meeting and saying thanks to the several club members who've volunteered to serve on the board for the first time next year, as well as the current board members who've offered to serve again for another year. Because there are no contested positions, the election will be very short and free of drama.

Following it, WE'LL BE HAVING A CATERED DINNER WHICH IS FREE TO CLUB MEMBERS WHO RSVP’D NO LATER THAN NOVEMBER 21.

Contact leader for meetup details.

We’ll carpool to the Canyon Lake Marina and from there head out on the Boulder Canyon Trail to Labarge Creek. The trek up LaBarge Canyon is beautiful with Battleship Mountain looming to our right and Geronimo Head on the left. We’ll eventually cross a ridge to Boulder Creek and take the Boulder Canyon Trail with its numerous stream crossings and then back to the trailhead circling Battleship in the process.

Our pace will be moderate but there will be considerable rock scrambling, which is why the hike is rated as difficult. Great views across the Superstitions and down onto Canyon Lake make it worthwhile.

We’ll end the day with a snack or light meal at the Canyon Lake Marina Restaurant.

Please wear sturdy hiking boots, rain gear if appropriate and bring plenty of water and snacks. No dogs or children please. If the streams are flowing, we’ll start off the same but modify our route to stay dry.

Cost to non-members is $5.

We will be doing an easy in-and-out hike in the park that opened in 2010 in the Stetson Hills community. The trail itself is actually pretty nice and well cut through the desert.

The adventure will be canceled if the weather is bad.

Bring sunscreen, hat, boots, plenty of water, snacks and $$$ for carpool. Children and well behaved outdoor dogs are welcome.

Cost to non-members is $5. Only guests and new members are required to contact the hike leader prior to the hike.

Meet at 7:30 am (depart at 7:45) at the Kohl’s parking lot, NW corner of E. Raintree Drive and Loop 101. Please park closer to the Pei Wei Restaurant. OR meet at Granite Mountain Trailhead (31402 N 136th Street, Scottsdale) at 8:15 am.

This is a beautiful hike around Granite Mountain and the relatively new Coyote Canyon area. This hike features beautiful rock formations, a crested saguaro and a unique “meatball” saguaro. Unusual for Arizona, the trails are relatively flat and rock-free! So we can enjoy the scenery and not look at our feet! The hike can be extended to the Balance Rock if the group is up for it.

Bring layers, water, sunscreen, snack and camera! No dogs or children.

Optional lunch at Portillos for their famous hot dog and Italian beef sandwich after the hike.

Cost to non-members is $5. Guests and new members should contact the hike leader prior to the hike.

Due to boulder hopping, this hike is only open to experienced hikers. There will be considerable rock scrambling, which is why the hike is rated as it is. After admiring petroglyphs on a wall in Agua Fria Canyon, we’ll begin hiking and boulder hopping down the canyon. Our route is a sandy riverbed studded with large granite boulders and lined with 200 foot-high rock walls. This time of year, the riverbed is usually dry, allowing hikers to travel several miles down the canyon. However, be prepared for multiple water crossings.

Wear sturdy hiking boots, a hat, and a light jacket. Bring hiking sticks, lunch and plenty of water. Hike could be canceled due to rain or high water. Call the hiker leader to confirm.

Cost to non-members is $5.

Bring a minimum of 2 liters of water, electrolytes, lunch and $ for carpool. Wear appropriate footwear, sunscreen and hat.

Let's close out the year with a little exercise! Our hike, in the Usery Mountains, is rocky and steep, but short. We'll hike a little less than 2 miles up the Meridian Trail to a saddle that gives us great views of the surrounding area. After meandering on a downslope, then back up again, we'll connect
with the Pass Mountain Trail to complete our loop and then head back to our cars. This is a good short workout that won't zap you of all your energy - so never fear, you can still go out that evening to ring in the New Year!

Wear sturdy hiking boots, bring plenty of water, and salty snacks. Hiking sticks recommended due to the rocky terrain.

Cost to non-members is $5.
