Meet and depart (promptly) at 6:00 am at the Echo Canyon Trailhead in Paradise Valley (south side of McDonald Road, a few hundred yards east of Tatum). The parking lot gate opens at sunrise = 5:46 am.

We’ll hike up the improved Echo Canyon Trail to the top of Camelback, then down the Cholla Trail on the east side of the mountain, before retracing our route back to the start. This is a tough and sometimes very steep 5-mile hike across Camelback Mountain, rewarded by sensational views of the entire Phoenix metropolitan area. Those wishing to may cut the hike in half by simply ascending and descending the mountain on the Echo Canyon Trail.

Although our sunrise start will beat most of the day’s heat, it is Phoenix and this is August. So wear sunscreen, sturdy hiking boots, and bring plenty of water. Although hiking poles aren’t much good on Camelback, hiking gloves are a help.

After we’re done, those who wish can join us for breakfast at the Original Pancake House.

Cost to non-members is $5. Guests and new members must call leader prior to hike.
