Meet at the Fountain Hills Wendy's on Shea Blvd., just west of the Beeline Hwy at 7:00 am (depart at 7:15).

Our hike begins at Deer Creek Canyon, south of Payson.  The desert-like trail has lots of cactus and red volcanic rock with white streaks through it called rhyolite - and open views of the Mazatzal Mountains. We'll come to the remains of an old windmill just before we climb our only steep hill as we leave Deer Creek, where the cottonwoods should be a bright cherry yellow if our timing is right.  For the next 3 miles we'll traverse up and down the canyon and in and out of gullies to David Gowan's Grave.  Jim and Bev will brush up on the history of this rancher and remarkable pioneer who was buried in the same spot where his frozen body was found many years ago.  This will also be our lunch spot and turnaround point.

Wear sturdy hiking boots and bring water, salty snacks, and a light lunch.

Cost to non-members is $5.

Guests and new members should contact one of the hike leaders prior to the hike.
