Goldmine Loop Hike (San Tan Mountains)

Saturday, November 19, 2016 - 07:00
Bev - 480-415-7147
C+ LENGTH: 7 mi ELEV GAIN: 1087 ft PACE: Medium

Meet at 7:00 am (depart at 7:15) on the SW corner of Ellsworth and Baseline Roads in Mesa, between Chase Bank and Wendy's.

This hike is rated by the park services as the most strenuous hike in the park, but in my opinion it is the best trail in the park! We'll start on the Goldmine Trail which is relatively flat. After following that for approximately a mile, we'll hop on the Dynamite trail which is a short steep trail. After a quick stop to catch our breath once we hit the high point of the trail, we'll descend on another short steep trail with scree on it - so sturdy hiking boots and sticks are suggested.

After another mile or so we'll come to the gravesites of prospectors Mansel Carter and Marion Kennedy who died in 1960 and 1987 respectively. They never found silver or copper in the San Tans, but they enjoyed their lives of seclusion. We'll make another quick stop at the gravesites for snacks before completing our loop.

After the hike, we can stop for an optional lunch at San Tan Flats.

Over half of the trail is exposed, so hats and/or sunscreen are highly recommended.

Park entry fee is $6 per vehicle.

Cost to non-members is $5.

Guests and new members should contact the hike leader prior to the hike.
