B LENGTH: 10 mi ELEV GAIN: 2000 ft PACE: Medium

Meet at 7:00 am (depart at 7:15) at the McDonalds on the Carefree Highway, just east of I-17.

O'Leary Peak is an ancient lava dome volcano just north of Sunset Crater Volcano. We'll hike up an old Jeep road, past the edge of the Bonito Lava Flow just north of Sunset Crater Volcano, to the summit and an active fire lookout tower. The road is relatively flat the first mile past the lava flow and then rises steadily across sparsely wooded slopes to the summit. Much of the surface in the lower area is made of loose, coarse black ash. This hike was Arizona Highways’ hike of the month for August 2015. Views at the top include San Francisco Peaks, Painted Desert and Sunset Crater.

We may optionally stop in Flagstaff for a meal afterwards.

Hike will be canceled if rain is forecast, so check the club website the night before the hike.

Bring plenty of water, boots, hat, lunch, sunscreen and rain poncho.

Cost to non-members is $5. Guests and new members should contact the hike leader prior to the hike.
