Schultz Fire (Flagstaff)
The Schultz Fire in Flagstaff has closed many hiking trails and due to the extent of the fire area, we can expect closures for some time.
Click here for information on the closure area as of July 1, 2010
Hiking Safety
Unfortunately the public lands that we use for hiking, biking and off roading are also used for less noble purposes such as drug and human smuggling and growing of illicit drugs. While these dangers should not prevent us from enjoying OUR lands, we should all take precautions and follow these guidelines....
- Stay off of trails formed where there shouldn't be any.
- Be wary of areas where trash is present, particularly tortilla wrappers and beer, Spam and tuna cans
- Stay away from any areas where there are signs of crop cultivation such as water lines, tools, etc.
- If You See Suspicious Activity, Do Not Confront!
- Do not take the time to take pictures or record GPS positions. Hike quickly out of the area and authorities later.
BLM Land South of Interstate 8
Another unfortunate sign of the times are warning signs posted by the federal government on BLM lands south of Interstate 8. These signs are "temporary" according to the government; lets hope that OUR lands will soon be safer. Until then, follow the guidelines listed above under Hiking Safety.
The BLM encourages visitors to use public lands north of Interstate 8.
